Play Framework

A bit about Play Framework

Play is a newer rapid development web stack for developing web applications.I think this is a very nicely framework for write applications, with much potential but which is at the very begining. Thus Play Framework makes it easy to build Web Applications with Java & Scala.

Play is an Open Source Web Application Framework, written in Scala and it aims to optimize developer productivity furthermore.Play is based on a lightweight, staleless, web friendly architecture.

Play is heavily inspired by ASP.NET MVC, Ruby on Rails and Django etc. Also Play Web Application can be written in Scala or Java and Play uses no Java EE constraints.Although Play Applications are designed to be run using the built-in JBoss Netty web server, they can also be packaged as WAR files to be distributed to standard Java EE application servers.

  • Play 1.0 was first published in May 2008
  • Play 1.1 was released in November 2010
  • Play 1.2 was released in April 2011
  • Play 2.0 was released in March 2012 with the help of Sadek Drobi
  • Play 2.1 was released in February 2013
  • Play 2.2 was released in September 2013
  • Play 2.3 was released in May 2014
  • Play 2.4 was released in May 2015

The Interesting Parts that I've found

  • Java (JVM) based
  • Automatically reloads java classes, templates etc.
  • Real world developer oriented, not power oriented or hacker oriented (errors are shown clearly and nicely)
  • No need to write getters and setters because they are automatically added.
  • Scala possible
  • Different testing styles can be used.

Things which I didn't like with Play

  • I wish it would use a build system, not for building but for dependency management, packaging etc.
